Servant of God Mar Ivanios, a revered figure, dedicated his life to serving God and humanity. Known for his prayer life, charismatic personality, broad vision, ascetic ministry, and tireless efforts for peace and human well-being, he inspired thousands of people.

Born on September 21, 1882, in Mavelikara, Kerala, Mar Ivanios was ordained as a Deacon on January 9, 1900. He pursued his M.A. Degree from Madras Christian College, becoming the first clergyman from the Syrian Orthodox fold to achieve this academic distinction. He served as the Principal of M.D. Seminary High School in Kottayam and was ordained as a Priest on September 15, 1908.

From 1913 to 1919, Mar Ivanios held esteemed positions as a Professor of Economics and Syriac at Serampore University College in Calcutta. He was recognized for his scholarship and appointed as the Chairman of the Board of Studies for Eastern Languages. Demonstrating his commitment to women’s education, he facilitated the admission of female students from Kerala at Diocesan College, Calcutta. On August 15, 1919, he founded the Bethany Ashram, blending Indian spiritual traditions and the monastic spirituality of St. Basil. On May 1, 1925, he was consecrated as a Bishop.

In 1926, following the Synod of the Malankara Church, Mar Ivanios initiated efforts for the Communion of the Malankara Church with the Universal Catholic Church. Although the Synod later retreated from this decision, Mar Ivanios, driven by the Holy Spirit’s calling, established Communion with the Universal Catholic Church on September 20, 1930. He is rightfully revered as the Prophet of Unity and relocated his headquarters to Trivandrum in 1932, serving as the head of the Malankara Catholic Church and the Archbishop of Trivandrum.

Mar Ivanios gained international recognition and respect, with G. K. Chesterton describing him as a heroic figure and a unique priest from the East. He delivered speeches at various foreign universities and centers, captivating scholars in Europe, America, and Australia. In 1947, the University of San Francisco awarded him an Honorary Doctorate L.L.D., praising him as an exemplary patriot, renowned scholar, Eastern visionary, and Christian philosopher.

In his pastoral ministry, Mar Ivanios made significant contributions to various aspects of human life. Recognizing education as a means of empowerment, he established several educational institutions, including Mar Ivanios College. His visionary outlook emphasized offering unconventional courses and providing avenues for co-curricular activities, creating new paths for education.

Furthermore, Mar Ivanios demonstrated a strong commitment to social work. He recognized the transformative power of education and established educational institutions to uplift individuals and provide them with opportunities for growth. He was dedicated to the empowerment of women and played a crucial role in facilitating their admission to Diocesan College in Calcutta, breaking barriers and promoting equal access to education. Mar Ivanios extended his care and concern beyond religious, caste, creed, and socioeconomic boundaries, working towards the upliftment of marginalized sections of society and emphasizing social justice and equality. His efforts towards peace and harmony, including his visionary work for the Communion of the Malankara Church, were driven by his desire to foster unity and understanding among different Christian denominations.

On July 15, 1953, Mar Ivanios passed away, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and service. Today, he is hailed by thousands as a saint, and on July 15, 2007, the Holy Episcopal Synod of the Malankara Catholic Church declared him a Servant of God as part of the Canonization process. His life and work continue to inspire and guide individuals dedicated to social work, emphasizing the values of unity, education, and holistic well-being.

Experience of MSSS

Since its inception in 1961 MSSS has been playing a leading role in the development area of Kerala.    MSSS has changed its approaches, according to the changed context, without diluting the Catholic principles and values of social justice, peace and human dignity in order to effectively address the problems of the weaker.

In the earlier phases lasting up to 1998, the approach of MSSS was to reach the Individual members/families of the weaker sections directly, through following activities:

  • delivery of material inputs for the destitute;
  • employment generation programmes for women and small farmers;
  • housing and sanitation for the weaker;
  • training and other capacity building activities for SHGs/CBOs;
  • education and training;
  • agriculture development;
  • livestock development;
  • micro-ventures;
  • women’s development;
  • health delivery systems in remote areas;
  • supporting vulnerable sections – orphans, destitute women, aged, etc.; and,
  • Introducing innovative farming practices.

By 1997 MSSS felt the need to change the above approach, as it is found that the above activities though benefited the recipient individuals/families, could not be sustained and make people dependent.
