Natural Resources Management: Sustainable use of the natural resources – soil,
water, air, plants and animals – are important to sustain life. MSSS is promoting watershed management, rain harvesting, bio-diversity, organic farming, conservation and propagation of indigenerous varieties of plants and breeds of animals and birds to sustain life. Community based organizations are the media for promoting sustainable management of natural resources.
Community based Disaster Management: Southern Kerala is experiencing
periodical natural disasters – floods, soil erosion, sea erosion, landslides, damages due to wind etc. MSSS is preparing the beneficiaries to prevent, and manage the disasters to reduce negative impacts.
Waste Management: MSSS has been supporting the population in managing
wastes – prevent generation of wastes and manage the produced wastes. Vermi- composting is promoted to convert degradable wastes into organic manure. Use of plastic carry bags are discouraged; and production of bags with degradable materials like coir, clothes, paper, jute etc. are promoted.
Climate change is creating havoc in Kerala with unseasonal rains and draughts.
Crops are getting damaged often. MSSS is planning to initiate steps to support the population in managing climatic changes.
