Inter-state migrant workers have become an important and integral part of the economy of Kerala. To promote the living and working conditions of migrants, Caritas India initiated various programs in Kerala, in partnership with DSSS partners in Kerala.“Ensuring safety and health security of migrant workers” is one of the programs designed for the migrant workers for providing free Health Insurance, Post Covid medical treatment, vaccination drive as well as awareness programs for health and safety and legal and social entitlements. To ensure the Safety and health security of migrant workers, Caritas India organized programs to provide outreach medical camps at the worksite and residential camps, distributed free medical and first aid kits, and Health Insurance as part of the Covid support project by CHARIS, Singapore to the migrants who are living in Trivandrum District.
As part of the CHARIS Program, We have conducted three awareness classes for 319 migrants, Seven medical camps for 475 migrants, and 200 Migrants getting Insurance support. Most of the programs are conducted with the assistance of excise officers, panchayath presidents, panchayath members, and police. Medial camps helped them to be health conscious especially it helped a lot to give awareness regarding the adverse effects of alcohol addiction and substance abuse. This is something remarkable because they were little conscious of their health and have no proper awareness regarding the side effects of substance abuse and alcoholism.
